Buffer Underrun Prevention for DVD-R drives Toast now supports the buffer underrun prevention feature of the Apple SuperDrive, the Pioneer DVR-A03, and the Panasonic LF-D311. Note that this feature is only available when DVD-R or DVD-RW media (if applicable) are loaded into the drive. To enable buffer underrun prevention, select the checkbox in the Write Now dialog box just before writing. Be aware that discs written with buffer underrun prevention are not suitable masters for duplication in a commercial DVD press. Also note that DVD-Video discs written with buffer underrun prevention may not be playable in many consumer DVD players. Support for DVD-R media speed detection Dynamic detection of available speeds for DVD media was added: Toast can now burn at 1x and 2x DVD speeds on Apple DVD media. Better responsiveness when burning to built-in ATAPI/IDE recorders It is now easier to switch between Toast and other applications while recording to a built-in drive. Improved Compatibility with AppleÕs iTunes and Disc Burner Inserting a blank CD will raise a Mac OS dialog asking to prepare the blank disc for burning. When Toast CD Reader 5.0.2 is installed, the new default choice is to launch Toast. NOTE: If you install iTunes or Disc Burner (or update them) after you install Toast Titanium 5.0.2, use Extensions Manager to disable ÒUSB Authoring SupportÓ and ÒFireWire Authoring SupportÓ. Apple Packet Media Access Compatibility The ÒApple Packet Media AccessÓ file system translator that ships with certain machine-specific builds of Mac OS 9.1 and later is now correctly supported: non-finalized CD-R and CD-RW discs, such as those created by Dantz Retrospect, will now mount on the Desktop as ÒPacket MediaÓ. Improved Bridge and Drive Support Amacom USB CD-RW with ScanLogic USB bridge. Genesys Logic USB bridge Dura Micro USB 2.0 bridge Iomega USB 2.0 bridge ISD-300 USB 2.0 bridge La Cie USB 2.0 bridges QPS USB 2.0 bridge Note that all USB 2.0 bridges function at USB 1.1 speeds on the Macintosh. The Mac OS does not currently support USB 2.0 speeds. Bug fixes for the Apple SuperDrive/Pioneer DVR-A03 A problem writing ISO9660 CD-ROM XA tracks has been fixed. A problem where multiple burns or simulations in succession would fail with a bogus buffer underrun error has been fixed. Bug fix for the Yamaha 2100E An Illegal Request error with Audio Disc-At-Once when this drive is internally connected to the Macintosh ATAPI/IDE bus has been fixed. Bug fix for Disc-to-Disc Copy An intermittent hang problem while verifying disc-to-disc copies has been fixed. Known issues Burning Audio CDs from MP3 files at high speeds Toast decodes MP3 files on-the-fly while burning Audio CDs. With newer high-speed CD burners, decoding speeds may not be sufficient to sustain uninterrupted burning. We recommend enabling buffer underrun prevention, if available. In some cases, because drives need some time to recover from a buffer underrun, reducing the burn speed may actually result in a quicker overall burn. UDF Discs with files larger than 4 GB Toast Titanium can create DVD-R/DVD-RW discs that contain a file greater than 4 GB. The discs are written properly; however, due to bugs in the Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X UDF file system readers, such large files cannot be read correctly and may not even be visible to the Mac OS Finder. Apple SuperDrive: Problems Burning to Non-Apple DVD-R Media Early shipping versions of the Apple SuperDrive DVD/CD recorder have an issue writing at 2x speed to Mitsui and Maxell DVD-R media. Although the drive reports it is capable at writing with 2x speeds to these media, the resulting discs cannot be read in some DVD-ROM drives and consumer DVD players. The workaround is to burn to this media at 1x speed. The only DVD-R media guaranteed by Apple to support 2x burn speeds is AppleÕs own. See http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n58770, which states that 2x speeds are ÒConfirmed with Apple media only.Ó Later shipments of the Apple SuperDrive may not have this issue. All shipping Pioneer DVR-A03 drives with firmware 1.44 or later do not have this issue. Panasonic DVD-RAM/DVD-R LF-D310/311 This drive can take up to 15 minutes to finish writing the Lead-Out. It can also take up to 15 minutes to abort a burn, even in Simulation mode. Copy Protection Not all CDs or DVDs can be copied using the Copy format. If you experience trouble copying a CD, try saving it as a disc image first or use the Data or Audio formats. If you experience trouble copying a non-copy-protected DVD, try saving it as a disc image first or use the DVD format. Toast Guide The file ÒToast GuideÓ must be located in the same folder as the Toast application in order for the online help to work properly. You may receive the error message: ÒHelp is not available because a Mac OS error of type Ð35 occurredÉÓ if the ÒToast GuideÓ file is not in the same folder as Toast. File Sharing If file sharing is on and you mount an unlocked disc image that has little or no free space on it, an error message appears saying that file sharing cannot be enabled. You can turn off file sharing or ignore the error message. Video CD Video CDs cannot be verified. When you use Copy format to copy a Video CD, only the first track (containing layout information) will be verified. Troubleshooting Toast If you are experiencing any problems or have any questions, please check to make sure that you have the latest version of this product. If there is an issue, it may already be corrected with a newer version. Hints and Tips on Using Toast If youÕve had limited experience working with your CD recorder, you may want to use ToastÕs Check Speed or Simulation Mode features the first time you record a CD in an unfamiliar format. Should there be an issue either with simulation or actual recording, try the following suggestions: Reduce the recording speed. CD recorders are very time sensitive. If data is not presented to the drive at the correct time, the burn will fail with a ÒBuffer UnderrunÓ error. Reducing the recording speed allows more time for the hardware and software to present the drive with the proper data at the proper time. Increase the Cache size. There is a Preferences menu item under the Edit menu that allows you to increase the RAM cache used by Toast. The higher the cache, the more data Toast can load into memory before it actually starts recording. The audio format sends more data per second than other formats. If you are able to correctly burn discs in other formats but fail while writing an audio CD, please increase the cache size or decrease the recording speed as described above. If you experience any problems using your CD recorder to read or write CDs, please check RoxioÕs web site for a software update and check with the manufacturer of your CD recorder for firmware updates. System Compatibility Notes Toast requires a Power Macintosh computer running Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2. If you have a FireWire CD recorder and Mac OS 8.6, we recommend you install AppleÕs FireWire 2.3.3 update. If you have a FireWire CD recorder and Mac OS 9.0 to 9.0.4, we recommend you install AppleÕs FireWire 2.5 update. If you have a USB CD recorder and Mac OS 8.6, we recommend you install AppleÕs USB Storage Support 1.3.5 update. Because older PowerBook computers do not support SCSI Manager 4.3, only the following PowerBook computers are supported by Toast with SCSI CD recorders: PowerBook 2400, 3400, PowerBook G3 Series, PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze). The Toast iMovie plugin requires iMovie 2.0.1 or later. What Was New in Toast Titanium 5.0.1? iTunes and Disc Burner Compatibility Toast Titanium 5.0.1 makes it possible to burn CDs with AppleÕs iTunes and Disc Burner using the Toast system extensions. This version includes Toast extensions which are compatible with iTunes and Disc Burner. The Toast Titanium 5.0.1 Installer moves two iTunes/Disc Burner extensions, ÒUSB Authoring SupportÓ and ÒFireWire Authoring SupportÓ, into the ÒExtensions (Disabled)Ó folder. All other iTunes and Disc Burner extensions including ÒAuthoring SupportÓ are left untouched and should remain in the Extensions folder. After restart, Toast will be able to burn CDs and so will iTunes and Disc Burner, which now use the Toast extensions. This allows iTunes and Disc Burner to access and burn CDs on certain CD recorders which were not supported by the Apple extensions. Mac OS 9.1 is required for this additional iTunes and Disc Burner functionality. Built-in CD-RW Drives Even though your CD-RW drive is your only CD drive, you can use Copy format to copy data or audio CDs, providing you have sufficient hard disk space. Toast caches the CD to the hard disk, then ejects the original CD and prompts you to insert a blank CD. SuperDrive Support Toast Titanium 5.0.1 includes support for burning DVD-R and DVD-RW discs on the Apple SuperDrive. What Was New in Toast Titanium 5.0? New Graphical User Interface Our research has shown that most CDs burned are one of three types: Data CDs, Audio CDs, or Copies of CDs. You can now easily access these popular formats through the large buttons at the top of the interface. You can access the advanced CD and DVD formats through the ÒOtherÓ drop-down menu. Background Burning Toast now has the ability to burn CDs in the background while you use other applications in the foreground. Toast allocates as many system resources as it needs to complete a burn successfully. If there are no resources left, the burn may still fail with a buffer underrun error unless a drive with buffer underrun prevention is used. However, we expect this to happen rarely. Video CD Preparation Toast 5 Titanium now automatically prepares digital video files for Video CD format. Video CDs can be played on computers (Macintosh and Windows) and the majority of consumer DVD-Video players. Toast includes a QuickTime codec that encodes digital video into MPEG-1 format and burns it to Video CD. This extension is available to any QuickTime compatible application, such as QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro, and is usually accessible from the ÒExport MovieÓ menu. Toast also includes a plugin for iMovie that allows you to send your movie to Toast for burning a Video CD. (Requires iMovie 2.0.1 or later) In addition, any QuickTime movie can be used to create a Video CD by simply dragging it into ToastÕs Video CD window. Toast no longer requires MPEG-1 Video CD streams to be ÒToast ReadyÓ. DVD Mastering All the features and functionality of Toast DVD, RoxioÕs premiere DVD mastering solution for Macintosh, have been merged into Toast 5 Titanium. A DVD menu item has been added to the ÒOtherÓ drop-down menu. Toast fully supports DVD-R and DVD-RW recorders, DVD-RAM drives, and DLT tape drives. Toast has complete support for DVD-ROM premastering and is the ideal companion to DVD-Video authoring products such as AppleÕs DVD Studio Pro. New MP3 Disc Format Toast 5 Titanium can now automatically create CDs that are playable in MP3 CD-ROM audio players. Toast offers to correctly name the MP3 files and then automatically burns the files into the proper format (hybrid HFS/ISO 9660). The new MP3 format is accessed from the ÒOtherÓ drop-down menu. Improved Data CD Format Toast now supports AppleÕs Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) file system. Also, this new version of Toast greatly simplifies the creation of cross-platform (hybrid) discs. You can now select the format(s) in which a data CD is written: Mac OS Standard only, Mac OS Standard and PC, Mac OS Extended only, or Mac OS Extended and PC. Improved Audio CD Format Toast now uses QuickTime to convert audio files for which it has no built-in support. Simply drag any file that QuickTime recognizes into the Toast Audio window and Toast converts the file into standard audio format. If the QuickTime file is a video or movie, the audio is extracted and turned into an audio track. Please note that QuickTime cannot extract audio from MPEG movies. Improved CD Copy Format ToastÕs CD copy format has been greatly improved. Toast now copies all compliant, non-copy-protected DVDs and single session CDs. This includes CD-ROMs, Audio CDs, Video CDs and other CD-ROM XA and Mixed Mode CDs. Only the first session of a multisession CD is copied. Only Apple installed CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-RAM drives, and CD recorders controlled by Toast CD Reader are supported as source devices. Online Help System Toast now provides Apple HTML help throughout the application. You can invoke it via the Help button (the question mark) on the Toast window, by using the Help menu, or by pressing the Help button on your keyboard. Other New Features and Improvements Inline Editing In Toast you can now edit the titles of audio tracks and the name of the CD, folders, and files without having to go to another window. This feature saves time. The new user interface displays a data CD as a hierarchical list of folders with the top folder being the name of the CD. You can edit these names inline. Abort Burn Button You can cancel disc burning after it starts. Canceling a real (not simulated) burn usually renders the disc unusable. Mixed Mode changes Mixed Mode CDs (CDs that contain both data and audio in one session) are rarely used these days. Multisession discs are the preferred method of delivering both audio and data on the same disc. Toast 5 Titanium continues to fully support Mixed Mode CD creation, although the interface has changed. You can combine audio tracks with data by holding down the option key while clicking ÒRecordÓ while in the Data format. A dialog window appears explaining the options. Improved Track Name Lookup FreeDB is now the default choice for automatically looking up track names via the Internet. You can use any other database server by entering its web address in the Toast Preferences window.
