Tips for Audio Format

Like all great Macintosh applications, Toast offers more than one way to accomplish most tasks. These tips point out alternatives.

Data Transfer Speed

The Audio format sends more data per second than other formats. If you are able to record CDs in other formats but fail while writing a music CD, try these suggestions: increase the RAM cache size, choose a lower write speed, or choose Save As Disc Image from the File menu and record the disc image.

Selecting Tracks

1 Select the music files in the Finder and drag them onto the Audio window.
2 When selecting from a music CD, drag one or more tracks, or to select all the tracks, simply drag the icon of the CD.

Rearranging Audio Files

    • To change the order of tracks on the finished CD, drag individual audio files around in the Audio window.

Removing Tracks

To remove tracks from the list, select the tracks and click Remove.

Previewing Tracks

To play a track, select it in the Audio window and click Play in the controls provided.

The track plays back using the Macintosh internal audio output. If the track is on a CD that's not currently mounted, Toast prompts you to insert it.

Saving Tracks as Sound Files (Audio Extraction)

Toast can save an audio track as a standard AIFF sound file. Simply select the desired track or tracks in the Audio window and click Extract To.

Entering the Titles of Source CDs and Tracks

When you drop an audio CD onto the Toast window, a small dialog box asks you to give the CD a title.

You can type the title yourself and click OK, or you can click Internet. If you click Internet, and the CD is present in the online library, the online track-naming service assigns the album title and all the track titles automatically for you.

Editing the Titles of Source CDs and Tracks

You can edit track names in the Audio window in two ways:

    • Double-click the name of a track, and one of these naming dialog boxes appears: Enter the track name(s), and then click OK. To move to a different track, use the small arrows in the lower left corner of the dialog box. In the dialog box for the digital audio track, you can also type a name for the CD.
    • Select the track name in the Audio window. Wait about 1 second, and the highlight color changes, indicating that you can now type a new name. (This inline editing procedure works the same as renaming an icon in the Finder.) When you have selected and edited one line, you can use the Tab key to move to the next line.

Recording from Multiple Source CDs

If you have selected tracks from more than one CD, Toast displays a list of the CDs when you click Record.

Make sure you have all the source CDs available before proceeding.

While Toast is writing, the Greatest Hits dialog box prompts you to insert the appropriate source CD as it reads each track.

The Pause Between Tracks

If you drag in sound files, Toast automatically inserts a 2-second gap between tracks. If you drag in a music CD, Toast retains the gaps from the source CD. To specify a different gap

1 Select the track(s) for which you want to change the pause.
2 Click Pause at the top of the list or click the pause shown for a selected track.
3 Choose the pause you want from the pop-up menu that appears.
