Custom Hybrid Format

The Custom Hybrid format combines both ISO 9660 and Mac OS Standard (HFS) or Mac OS extended (HFS+) format on a single CD. Use this format to record CDs that can be read on a Macintosh computer and on a PC, with the Macintosh computer data visible only to Macintosh users and the ISO data visible only to other users. This allows Macintosh computer users to see the normal icons and window positions for the data, while maintaining complete compatibility with DOS/Windows systems (and others).

When to Choose Custom Hybrid Format

    • Multimedia applications intended for both Macintosh computer and DOS/Windows.
    • Writing picture, sound, or text files that can be read on both platforms.
    • Software created for both platforms that you want to deliver on a single CD.

When to Choose a Different Format

    • If you plan to use the CD only on Macintosh computers, use Data or Mac Volume format.
    • If you want to make a simple cross-platform CD to share with friends on Macintosh or Windows systems, use Data format.

Recording a CD in Custom Hybrid Format

A Custom Hybrid CD uses two data sources: a Macintosh volume and a group of files/folders you select as the ISO data.

No special preparation is needed for the ISO part. However, if you intend to prepare the CD for publishing, we recommend you collect the ISO data in a folder. This helps you avoid mistakes and also makes data selection easier. To select the data, drag the folder to the ISO 9660 window.

1 Prepare the data for the Macintosh volume part of the CD.
a Collect the Macintosh data on a computer volume (hard disk, temporary partition, hard partition, etc.). If you have enough space available, you can choose Create Temporary Partition from the Utilities menu and create a volume in a more manageable size. This volume should contain
    • Files and folders that will be visible only on the Macintosh computer
    • Files and folders you want both the Macintosh and ISO PCs to read. Referred to as the "shared data," these files will be written to the CD only once, as part of the Macintosh volume you prepare.
b You can arrange the data in any way, and the shared data may be located anywhere in the directory structure of the Macintosh volume. Be aware that the arrangement is copied exactly to the Macintosh part of the Custom Hybrid CD.
2 Click Other in the Toast window and hold down the mouse button.
3 Choose Custom Hybrid from the pop-up menu that appears.
4 In the Custom Hybrid window, click Select Mac.
5 In the dialog box that appears, select the volume (or temporary partition) you prepared and click OK.
6 For the ISO volume of the CD, click Select ISO.
7 Drag the files you want Windows PC users to read into the ISO 9660 window that opens.
    • If you select data located on the volume you prepared as the Macintosh source, that data will automatically be shared. Even though you select it for both the Macintosh and ISO sources, the data will be written to the CD only once.
    • Data you select from other volumes or directories is visible only on PCs.
8 Click the Settings tab, and select Joliet (MS-DOS + Windows) from the Naming pop-up menu.
9 When you are finished, click Done.
10 Before recording, confirm the structure of your hybrid CD:
a Choose Save as Disc Image from the File menu. The Macintosh computer and ISO parts are saved as a single CD image file.
b Choose Mount Disc Image from the Utilities menu. Two volumes are mounted on the desktop: one for the Macintosh part and one for the ISO part.

In fact, however, if you chose Joliet naming in the ISO 9660 Settings panel, there is a hidden third part to the disc image. The one you canŐt see when you mount the disc image preserves Joliet for Windows naming. If you double-click the mounted ISO disc image, the files appear with the truncated file names a DOS computer would see. If you selected Joliet naming in step 8, the names look fine on Windows PCs once you record the Custom Hybrid CD.

    11 Record the hybrid CD.
a Choose Disc Image from the Format menu. The disc image you saved in step 8a should appear in the Disc Image window. If it doesnŐt, click Select, and open the disc image from the dialog box that appears.
    b Click the Record button.
c In the Record dialog box, click Write Disc.
d When you see the message, "Verification completed successfully," click Eject.
