What's New in Toast 5

Toast 5 provides several important new features.

    • New Graphical User Interface: Our research has shown that over 94% of CDs burned are one of three types: Data CDs, Audio CDs, or Copies of CDs. You can now easily access these popular formats through the big buttons at the top of the Toast window. You can access the advanced CD and DVD formats through the Other drop-down format menu. You can access the advanced CD and DVD formats through the Other pop-up format menu.
    • Background Burning: Toast now has the ability to burn CDs in the background while you use other applications in the foreground. Toast allocates the resources it needs to complete a burn successfully. If resources run low and your CD-Recorder does not have buffer underrun prevention, the burn may fail with a buffer underrun error. However, we expect this to happen rarely.
    • Video CD Preparation: Toast 5 Titanium now automatically prepares digital video files for Video CD format. Video CDs can be played on computers (cross platform) and the majority of consumer DVD video players. Toast 5 Titanium also includes a QuickTime codec that encodes digital video into MPEG-1 format and records it to Video CD. This plug-in is available to QuickTime-compatible applications (such as QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro) and is usually accessible from the Export Movie command in the iMovie File menu. Toast 5 Titanium also includes a plug-in for iMovie that allows you to burn your movie to Video CD directly from iMovie. (Requires iMovie 2.0.1 or later.) In addition, you can create a Video CD by simply dragging any QuickTime movie onto Toast's Video CD window. Toast no longer requires MPEG-1 Video CD streams to be "Toast Ready.")
    • New DVD Mastering: All the features and functionality of Toast DVD, Roxio's premiere DVD mastering solution for Macintosh, have been merged into Toast 5 Titanium. DVD has been added to the Other pop-up format menu. Toast 5 Titanium fully supports DVD-R and DVD-RW recorders, as well as DVD-RAM drives and DLT tape drives. Toast 5 Titanium has complete support for DVD-ROM premastering and is the ideal companion to DVD video-authoring products such as Apple's iDVD and DVD Studio Pro.
    • New MP3 Disc Format: Toast 5 Titanium can now automatically create CDs that are playable in MP3 CD-ROM audio players. Toast 5 Titanium offers to name the MP3 files correctly and automatically burn the files into the proper format (hybrid HFS/ISO 9660). To access the new MP3 format, choose it from the Other drop-down format menu.
    • Improved Data CD Format: This new version of Toast greatly simplifies the creation of cross-platform (hybrid) discs. You can now select which format(s) a data CD will be written in: Mac OS only, Mac OS and PC, Mac OS Extended only, or Mac OS Extended and PC.
    • Improved Audio CD Format: Toast now uses QuickTime to convert audio files for which it has no built-in support. Simply drag and drop any file that QuickTime understands onto the Audio window, and Toast converts the file into standard audio format. If the QuickTime file is a video or movie, Toast extracts the sound track and turns it into an audio track. Please note that QuickTime cannot extract audio from MPEG movies.
    • Improved CD Copy Format: Toast's CD Copy format has been greatly improved. Toast will now copy all compliant, non-copy protected DVDs and single session CDs. This includes Audio CDs, CD-ROMs, Video CDs, and other CD-ROM XA and Mixed Mode CDs. Only the first session of a multisession CD will be copied. Only Apple CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM drives, and recorders controlled by Toast CD Reader are supported as source devices.
    • Online Help System: Toast now provides Apple HTML help throughout the application. To invoke Help, click the Help button (the question mark) on the Toast window, choose Toast 5 Help from the Help menu, or type Command-? when Toast is the foreground application.
