Audio file formats supported by iPod

iPod supports the following audio file types: MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR), WAV, and AIFF.

A song encoded in the AIFF or WAV format takes up more space than the same song encoded in MP3 format. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to MP3 format by default.

iPod does not support MPEG Layer 1 or MPEG Layer 2 audio files.
