Adding songs to your library without moving them

When you import songs from CDs, copies of the songs are placed in the iTunes Music folder. You can add also music files to your library without moving them into the iTunes Music folder.

To add songs to your library without changing their location:

Choose Add to Library from the File menu, then select the songs or the folder or disk where the songs are located.

iTunes adds a reference to the files in their exisiting location; the files are not copied or moved.

You can also add songs when you're in the Finder. Simply drag the song files to the iTunes library window. If you drop a folder or disk on the library, references to all the audio files it contains are added to the library.
