Why can't I burn a CD?

To create audio CDs with iTunes, you must have a supported CD-RW drive, Mac OS 9.1 or later (9.2.1 recommended), and the CD authoring software installed. All Apple internal CD-RW drives work with iTunes. To see if iTunes works with an external drive, choose Preferences from the Edit menu, then click the CD Burning tab. If your drive is listed, it will work with iTunes. For the latest information about CD drives, see the iTunes Web site.

If you have a supported drive, and when you click the Burn button a message says that no burner or software was found, other CD burning software may be conflicting with iTunes. If you have installed other software that burns CDs, use Extensions Manager to turn off its extensions. See Mac Help for information on using Extensions Manager.

If you can use iTunes to create CDs but are experiencing problems using other CD burning software, use Extensions Manager to turn off the Apple extension "USB Authoring Support" or "FireWire Authoring Support," as appropriate for your drive.

FireWire and USB CD-RW drives must be connected to a built-in port on your computer. Drives connected to expansion cards are not supported.

QPS Que!Fire Drives: If your drive has a Plextor mechanism and you experience poor playback performance, you may need to update the drive's firmware. Contact QPS for information on upgrading to firmware version 1.0.7 or later.

Make sure iTunes is the active application before inserting a blank CD. This will allow iTunes to recognize the blank disc.

If you've made a CD and it seems to stutter when played back in your external CD-RW drive, try playing it in your internal CD drive or in a stereo system. Some external drives may not play CDs properly.

If your CD burn is unsuccessful and your external drive becomes unresponsive, turn its power off and on to reset the drive.

If you receive an "out of memory" error when burning a disc, increase the memory allocated to iTunes, or turn on virtual memory. See Mac Help, available in the Help menu, for information about managing memory.
