Phobos G160 Fast Ethernet Driver Installation

                            Version 1.1

     ============================================================

Prior to installing the Phobos G160 Fast Ethernet Driver,
install the G160 Fast Ethernet GIO Adapter in your machine.
Please refer to SGI's insight(1) documentation, and the
documentation provided with your G160 Fast Ethernet GIO
Adapter for information on installing the network card.

Once the card has been installed the Phobos Driver may be
     installed using these steps:

        A) Become root on your machine either by logging in as root
or by using the su command.

        B) Insert the CD into the CDROM drive.

        C) Mount the CD. If 'mediad' is running the CD will
automatically be mounted for you on /CDROM. If 'mediad'
is not running, you will need to manually mount the CD.
See SGI's "Software Installation Administrator's Guide"
            for more information.

        D) Once the CD is mounted install the software using inst:

                1) Enter the inst command:

                    # inst

                2) Specify location of the software using the inst
                    'from' command.

                    For Irix 5.2 use:
                    Inst> from /<tar_directory>/5.3/dist

                    For Irix 6.2 use:
                    Inst> from /<tar_directory>/6.2/dist

                    For Irix 6.5 use:
                    Inst> from /<tar_directory>/6.5/dist

                3) Install the software using inst's 'go' command:

                    Inst> go

                4) Exit inst:

                    Inst> quit

At this point the driver software has been installed.
Reboot your machine to begin running with the new driver.

After you reboot there will be a new network interface
named 'gfe0'. Verify that the install was successful by
typing the command "ifconfig gfe0". It should return:

              # ifconfig gfe0
              gfe0: flags=822<BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,MULTICAST>

You may now use the ifconfig program to configure the
interface. Please refer to SGI's "IRIX(tm) Advanced Site
and Server Administration Guide" for further information on
      configuring network devices.

If you wish to use the Phobos G160 Fast Ethernet Adapter as
your primary interface, follow these steps:

         1) Cd to "/etc/config"

         2) Edit the file "netif.options" using your favorite editor.
             Look for the line:

         : if1name=

         Change it to read:

         if1name=gfe0

         3) Save your changes! Upon the next reboot gfe0 will be
             configured as your primary interface.

WARNING: If you make gfe0 your primary interface, any future
miniroot installs will not be able to use the
                  network interface.

To set gfe0 up as a secondary interface:

        1) Cd to "/etc/config"

        2) Edit the file "netif.options" using your favorite editor.
Choose the appropriate if[234]name line. For example, to
make gfe0 the third interface, find the line:

        : if3name=

        Change it to read:

        if3name=gfe0

        3) Save your changes! Upon the next reboot gfe0 will
automatically be configured as the third interface.
