Everything is integrated into a single table of content hierachy. The Windows Explorer displays a hierarchy of folders in its left pane and folders' content in its right pane. The only exception is the Internet folder which displays Web pages. A folder is a documents container. Thus a folder is a collection of documents. Each folder provides function like "New", "Delete", "Copy", "Paste", "Move" to manipulate its collection. The Document Explorer displays a hierarchy of folders and documents. The Windows Explorer functionnality is still there but augmented with new capabilities. In Windows Explorer, only folders are displayed in the outline (the left pane). In the Document Explorer, the outline view displays folders and documents. When a folder is expanded, its collection is displayed under it. This way, the right pane can be used to display the document (see figure below) [Image] figure 1 With the document explorer you are not restricted to only one view of all your intranet resources: the desktop. You can create new name space shortcuts having their hierarchy rooted on any folder. For example, you can have a new hierarchy rooted to My Documents. Such a hierarchy is called an Explorer Bar. Instead of starting a new window to display a new hierarchy, you simply select from a list of explorer bars without having to quit the document explorer. You can even cut, copy paste elements between explorer bars. Features * Create name space shortcuts * Display documents in the Explorer's right pane * Can edit in place with active document servers (Visio, PowerPoint, Excel, Word) * Set document filters for each Explorer bar Usage Context: Graphic Artists Graphic artists do have a lot of images stored either in their local drives in file servers. Often, the image's title do not really convey the right information, and an image worth thousand words. To resolve this problem, create an Explorer bar ( a name space shortcut) rooted on each folders containing your images. For example, an explorer bar rooted on a local drive's folder and an explorer bar rooted to a file server folder. Then specify to the wizard that you want to display gif, jpg, bmp, wmf and other document's type in the filter section. The explorer bar will then display all documents of this type when the folder containing these document is expanded. Now you can browse through your images without having to open several applications. Usage context: Software developers With the document explorer, developers can browse through source code without having to open their development environment or open them with notepad. The document explorer allows to browse through: * cpp * h * rc * def * mak * frm * bas A group of developers wants to share a source code libray and have the common goal to re-use software contained in the library. To browse a library, just open a document Explorer see the source code in the document viewer (i.e. explorer's right pane). You can even drag and drop it to your project when you found what you need.
